Description: Le Gaillon is a peaceful farmhouse, set in its own grounds, with lovely south facing views.
The house can sleep up to 10 people, but the owners recommend a maximum of 6 adults + baby, or 4 adults and 4 children + baby (a good-quality travel cot is available).
Full Description: Le Gaillon is a tastefully restored 200-year-old stone farmhouse in the heart of the lush rolling hills of the Pays de Bray. The interior has retained the charm and character of a traditional Normandy farmhouse, but with all the comforts of a modern home, making it ideal for summer or winter holidays.
High above the village it is private and tranquil in its own 3/4 acre of garden surrounded by farmland and benefits from stunning and uninterrupted 180 degree southerly views over the rolling countryside towards the distant Foret de Lyons.
The stone construction of the house means that it remains lovely and cool in the summer months, yet retains the heat in the winter to keep it nice and toasty. There are two fireplaces, the one in the kitchen is known as an "insert" glass-fronted wood-burning fire and is vented in the chimney to provide additional heat in both the dining room and upstairs bedrooms.

Outside: The house is set in its own 3000m2 garden. -
Outside is the stable block which provides a further 100m2 and is divided into various outhouses - one of which contains a table-tennis table, a table football table, and various games such as a volleyball net, badminton sets. There is also an ample stock of garden furniture - you will certainly need the sun loungers when the sun shines as the terrace is a real sun trap - all day long!
Location: It is just 1.2 miles from a village with bakery, charcuterie-grocery and bar; just 10 minutes drive away is the spa town of Forges-les-Eaux with its restaurants, casino, sporting and leisure facilities; and the beaches of the stunning white-cliffed "Cote d'Albatre" (the "alabaster coast") are within easy reach 40 minutes away.
It is hard to believe that this beautiful area is just 2 hours from Calais, making it an ideal base for those of you who do not wish to waste those precious holidays tearing down a motorway for hours on end! - This also makes it a very good destination for a short break, particularly if you live in London or the South-East - pick the children up from school on a Friday afternoon, drive to Dover, and you can be there well before bedtime, giving you 2 whole days to unwind and recharge your batteries before heading back to Calais early on Sunday evening.
The Area Until recently, the owners were unaware of the beautiful Pays de Bray as they would either hare straight through at 130km/h on the motorway heading south, or would bypass the area completely by taking the longer ferry routes to Caen or Le Havre.
They have now discovered the advantages of the (cheaper) Dover-Calais crossing - no more stress about missing your ferry, because if you do, the next one leaves just 45 minutes later! The Pays de Bray is a truly beautiful part of Normandy. Lush undulating farmland, with a proud tradition of dairy farming - the fat Norman cattle grazing in the deep green grass provide the rich cream, butter and cheeses such as the heart-shaped Neufchatel-en-Bray; and the abundance of apples for the local cider and calvados makers.
The owners have found that the house and grounds are such a wonderful place to just chill-out and recharge their batteries, whatever the weather, that they tend not to stray very far. But there is plenty to do and see in the region, should you wish to explore the area!
Neighbourhood activites: Forges les Eaux The nearest town, 10km. This delightful spa town has pretty lakes and woodland walks, a smart casino (very popular with Parisians as it is only 70 miles from Paris and open every night until 5am), forges Hotel with health spa (daily membership is available for the gym, pool, sauna and various thalassic-therapy seaweed treatments), fishing, tennis, and an indoor/outdoor pool, as well as a selection of restaurants, bars and a weekly market.
Dieppe This delightful seaside town is just 40 minutes drive to the North - take a stroll along the harbour and stop off to try the famous "Marmite Dieppoise" at one of the many harbour side restaurants. Continue along the glorious Normandy "Cote d'Albatre", (the "Alabaster Coast") - rugged, uncrowded, and full of French charm with beautifully clean sand and pebble beaches below white chalk cliffs. Set amongst the many small villages are numerous restaurants with sea views serving freshly caught fish and seafood.
Rouen About 30 minutes drive to the west is the ancient town of Rouen - cobbled streets, medieval architecture, numerous churches and a magnificently restored Cathedral, as well as being a shopper’s paradise of little antique shops and excellent boutiques. Jeanne d'Arc was burned at the stake in the old market place, and there is a museum there, dedicated to her life.
Golf The 18 hole golf course at St-Saens is just 20 minutes away by car. Based on a Scottish design, it rambles over a river valley and forested hillside. The clubhouse is a classic Normandy chateau where you can enjoy an excellent reasonably priced lunch or dinner. A little farther afield are several more good courses within a 50km radius, such as Jumieges, Rouen, and Etretat, and the Champ de Bataille, considered to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in France. In fact Normandy is rated among the top ten most desirable golfing locations in the world!
For the children If they ever tire of all the outdoor and indoor games or of being allowed to just roam freely in the large gardens exploring the wildlife and making friends with the cows in the next field, there are plenty of places to take them? The beaches near Dieppe, the swimming pools at Forges and Gournay are both within 20 minutes drive, the open air fun fairs of St Paul and Bocasse are both within easy reach, the chateau at Cleres with its exotic animals and birds roaming the grounds, the Avenue Verte cycle track, the list is endless! If they are very good, you can even reward them (or should that be ?bribe? them?!) with a day trip to Disneyland or Parc Asterix which are both an easy 1.5 hour drive along the motorway.
Art Lovers Guy de Maupassant, Flaubert, Marcel Proust and Oscar Wilde all resided in the nearby area at some time during their lives or go just a little further afield to Monet's house and garden at Giverny, just over an hour away by car.
L'Avenue Verte This is a new cycle track that runs along the old railway line - it links Forges les Eaux with Dieppe. One of a number of initiatives currently underway, this cycle route will eventually link London with Paris, via the Newhaven-Dieppe channel crossing. The best thing about this cycle track is that as it follows the railway line, it is relatively flat! Paris and Disneyland Just 1.5 hours by car (2 hours by train), a stay at Le Gaillon offers you a great opportunity to visit the French capital during your break.
